Who in the world greenlit a Saturday morning cartoon based on Troma Films’ The Toxic Avenger? I ask somewhat facetiously, but seriously, how strange is that? And then Playmates Toys, best known for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles assortment of toys, got the license? 1993 was a weird year, man.
Anyways.
In the early 2010s, a friend of a friend sold me his old TMNT collection for a pretty cheap price. Included in that collection was this guy:
I actually used to have a Toxie figure as a kid, and thought it was pretty rad. But a couple things always bothered me — In the cartoon, Toxie’s rights were blue, not black. And his shredded tutu shouldn’t be the same color as his tanktop! So I pulled out some paints and got to work.
I made sure his tutu was sparkly and pink, like all good tutus should be. Blue tights, black boots, and I grimed up the orange tanktop and bandana. I also went out of my way to make all of his warts look extra ready to pop! I didn’t receive Toxie’s original mop accessory, but I had a few old JAKKS Pacific WWF mops laying around, so I trimmed the handle on one and just clipped it right in his hand.
I then applied a layer of glow-in-the-dark green paint to the figure. After all, he became the hideously-deformed creature of superhuman size and strength when Melvin Junko fell in a vat of radioactive waste, and what good radioactive hero doesn’t glow in the dark?
It’s clean up time!
