I love mythological beasts, but I don’t have a lot of experience drawing animals? So I figured I should keep practicing.
A hippogryph is a mythological Greek monster, that is the head, wings, and forelimbs of an eagle with the hindquarters and legs of a horse. I was first introduced to the creature in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and thought it might be cool to do my own interpretation.
For most of this piece, I did the outlines for this backwards — I started with a big black silhouette, and then “carved” out the feathers with the eraser tool.
The background is entirely digitally painted. I learned some new techniques working on that background that I’m looking forward to employing in the future.
