As a little kid, I remember sitting in my living room and watching reruns of the 1960s Hanna Barbera action cartoons. The prehistoric-based Herculoids, winged superhero Birdman (before he was a lawyer), and, of course, intergalactic hero Space Ghost were my favorites of the group.
And when I was a teenager, Space Ghost returned to my TV screen as the host of the faux talk show, Space Ghost Coast 2 Coast, a true example of 90s absurdist humor. And while I have nothing against C2C, it was the more kid-friendly Cartoon Planet that fit my sense of humor a bit better.
Watching Space Ghost and his enemies Zorak and Brak sit around and read fan letters, and sing goofy songs, all while butchering poetry was a highlight of my mid-90s Saturday mornings.
I used a MLR 3.75” Moon Knight figure as the base, with a Bullseye figure’s head. A cape from Vision with the collar trimmed off. I sanded off Moon Knight’s crescent logo, and painted him up!
I chose Bullseye’s head, because he has that sadistic grin. I figured whiting out the eyes would make SG look more like his TV show host version.
I’m not totally happy with how the power bands turned out. I’ll definitely have to fix those up at some point in the future. But for singing about how he loves almost everybody, they’re good enough for now.
Space Ghost, Space Ghost Coast 2 Coast, Cartoon Planet, Hanna-Barbera, Zorak, Brak, Birdman, The Herculoids and all related characters and concepts are owned by Warner Bros, and whomever their parent company is this year.
